Dear Ms. Davidow,
Coming in to college I didn’t know what I wanted to major in, but I had a dream to get a degree of some sort. I’m motivated to work hard and achieve my goals in life whether it be related to school or my hobbies. After a month of my first semester in college I decided that mechanical engineering would be right for me, I felt this was perfect for me because I have an interest in how things function and for what reasons they do what they do. One of the reasons why I chose this field was because of the money, though I later realized that chasing money wouldn’t get me far in life because there are many other ways to make money but if I want to be a successful engineer than I would have to focus on my studies. My parents never put any pressure on me to become a doctor, lawyer, or an engineer, all my parents wanted for me was for me to be passionate about what I’m going to pursue.
My parents were born in Pakistan and moved to New York after they got married over there, a few years later I was born. So even though I was born in Queens, New York I still hold traditions from Pakistan that my parents passed down to me. Last time I went to Pakistan was in 2015, and my family and I stayed for 2 months and it was great, I got to meet my relatives and see the differences in the lifestyles of there and here. I learned how to ride a motorcycle and a manual transmission car, I enjoyed going there. I hope to visit back soon.
Even though I like Pakistan I wouldn’t want to live there because I prefer New York over it. The thing I like about New York is the city life style, I like the skyline, the famous bridges, and the history. Everything that New York is known for is great, our MTA system is like no other and even though it is flaws doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate it. As a New Yorker I would consider my self as a busy person, someone who is never doing nothing, I try to fill my time with things like going to the gym, biking and just exploring the city. A personal goal of mine is to start reading on my free times and to learn about the stock market. I feel like having more knowledge about things will help me become a better engineer.
Sincerely,
Abdul Arfeen
